PUBLIC WORK
Mosaic, Ceramic and Concrete School Sculptures
Very hands on, very space & time needy in a school and very rewarding! Although, sometimes when I am fettling (cleaning up the edges) of hundreds of pieces of unfired clay, I say to Pete, 'let's NEVER' do a ceramic project again'!
The real advantage of mosaic and clay is that any age can be involved. We have had several very successful ceramic projects with McMillan Nursery School in Hull, and in other schools I always insist that the very youngest children get involved – anyone can stab a piece of clay or lay a tile, and, you know, it’s a really odd thing but there is ALWAYS clay which needs playing with or a box of mosaic tiles which needs sorting…
We make the concrete slabs by filling the bottom of a slab shaped box with clay and the design is put in reverse into it. Then this is cast off site in concrete. We use this method in our public art projects too.
