Alex Other Work

Other Work.... it's varied!

I've put a few images from my community arts days - banners and masks, and following on from the playing theme, I have over the years made a few ‘art’ pieces, sometimes responding to an event (like turning 50!) or asking the question ‘what would happen’ – hence the slightly gruesome collection of ‘What the Cat brought in’ – yes, all these ceramic pieces were what the cat brought in, and the ceramic shells still contain the bones of the creatures. The firing was, I can tell you, VERY smelly… But generally my work is functional, and quite often I draw on the back on an envelope, and Pete makes the design, which is perfect division of labour! (see image of fish gate and fern screen, for instance, elsewhere on the site)

Increasingly as my hands give out through arthritis, I’m working on the computer – making books and writing things no-one will ever read!

The copper trays with fish you see here are made using our 'wire picture' technique - where you make a picture using 2mm steel wire and press it into the metal.  It's a process we use a lot with the community, because it gives real hands on experiences and they can see a real thing they made.

The 16 Thousand Project

And sometimes being a small part of a team is really satisfying – I was the instigator (with Andrew Shimmin, then head of McMillan Nursery School in Hull) of the 16 Thousand project for early years during our City of Culture year. We approached the City of Culture team and asked them what they were going to do specifically for the under 5’s and we offered several project concepts. They chose this one - not the easiest and a logistic nightmare. I did training with representatives from each of the Early Years settings in the city, then clay was distributed and every child textured a brick, which was fired. The final installation was fab
